We work to keep our community safe, clean and enjoyable for everyone. This is done by creating and enforcing local rules—called bylaws—to protect people, property, and public spaces. Our bylaw officers are dedicated to keeping Orangeville a great place to live and visit. They work hard responding to concerns about noise, property issues, and other local bylaws.

How does enforcement work in Orangeville?

Bylaw enforcement in Orangeville is community-led. This means we respond when residents report concerns.

Our team looks into each complaint to decide if a bylaw was broken. We aim to fix issues through education and voluntary compliance first, but fines or legal action may follow if needed.

Everyone plays a part in keeping our community safe and respectful.

Common bylaws

There are some bylaws we receive more questions about than others. We have put together a page with those bylaws. Click the button below for more.

  • Report complaints as soon as possible after the issue occurs.
  • Gather as many details as possible. Photos, videos, and noise logs help a lot.
  • Bylaw officers will follow up if more information is needed.

Breaking down the bylaw

Our noise bylaw was updated in 2024 to meet the needs of the Orangeville community. It aims to minimize loud (excessive) noises that may disturb or bother residents enjoying their own or public property.

Noise that's not allowed (prohibited)

These noises are not allowed at any time in the community:

  • Playing loud music using any kind of device that increases its reach (amplifies sound). This includes speakers, car stereos, radios, or other electronic devices.
  • Barking and other noises from dogs or animals for long periods.
  • Running construction equipment that is broken or not working properly, causing it to make extra noise.
  • Cars and other vehicles with loud or modified exhausts and loud engines making too much noise. This includes when the vehicle is on private property.
  • Air conditioners, pumps, or other machines that are broken and noisy.
  • Selling or advertising by shouting or using loudspeakers.

Can I operate equipment that isn't noisy?

What happens after I file a complaint?

A bylaw officer will review your complaint and contact you about what happens next. We look at each complaint separately to make sure we are fair.

  • further enforcement by the Town

If legal action is needed, you might have to appear in court.

How do I report disturbances (like fighting or arguments)?

If you need to report noise from people fighting, screaming, shouting, swearing or using rude language, or from other disorderly behaviour, please contact the OPP.
