 FAQs

When should I apply for a marriage licence?

A marriage license is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. You can only apply for your licence within 3 months of your proposed wedding date.

We recommend submitting your application approximately 2-3 months in advance of your intended date to allow sufficient appointment availability to be scheduled for pickup, however you may be able to apply with as little as 1 weeks' notice (based on appointment availability for issuance).

How do I apply?

You must complete the marriage license application form and submit it to the Town where you would like to pick-up your license. You may either apply online through the link provided above or submit an application form in person at Town Hall. The requirements for each type of application differ, so please review the appropriate section below.
Online Application Process

The Town of Orangeville has partnered with Service Ontario to streamline the Marriage licence application process online.

The application takes about 25 – 30 minutes to complete and requires both parties to be present to provide their personal information and certify the online form.

You will be asked to provide information related to both parties and the proposed wedding and provide photographs or scans (jpg, png or pdf) of two pieces of government-issued identification (front and back) with at least one being photo identification (ID), for each application (four total).

Note: There is a choice to electronically upload IDs and supporting documents or provide originals in-person to the municipality when picking up the licence at your appointment. By uploading online, you bring less documents in-person to the municipality and save time during your visit, while also making sure you have the correct ones as we will verify prior to your appointment.

Additional supporting documents that may be required include:

  • Photographs or scans of divorce or annulment decree or judgement, or a certificate of divorce (if either party is remarrying after a divorce or annulment in Canada).
  • Foreign Divorce or Annulment Authorization (if either party was divorced or had an annulment outside of Canada)
  • A death certificate, funeral director’s statement of death or Court Order declaring spousal death (if either party is remarrying after the death of a spouse).

Once you complete your online application form you will receive a confirmation email that will contain the link required to pay for your licence.

Upon payment of the fee, you will receive a confirmation of payment email that will include the link for you to book your appointment to pick up your licence. Same day appointments are not permitted.

The person picking up the license must bring one piece of photo ID to confirm their identity. You may also be required to bring original copies of any supporting documents that may be required that were not uploaded during the application process.

In-person Application Process

Please download and complete this form: Marriage Licence Application - Marriage Act - Form 3 - Forms - Central Forms Repository (CFR)

The form must be signed by both parties.

You must submit the form at Town Hall and bring in 2 pieces of ID (1 must be photo) for each of the parties (four total), plus any additional supporting documents that may be required and pay your fee.
After you have paid your fee, you can schedule a date and time to come back in to pick up your completed licence. Same day appointments are not available.

Only 1 party to the marriage is required to attend to pick up the licence, and they must bring in 1 piece of photo ID.

How much does a Marriage Licence cost?

Pursuant to By-law Number 2024-073, effective January 1, 2025, the fee to obtain a Marriage Licence is $160.

After the Wedding

Your officiant will submit all required documentation to the province for registration.

Marriage certificates

A marriage certificate contains the details of a marriage that was performed in Ontario. You will need the certificate in order to change your name, process a divorce or record your family history. You may apply for a marriage certificate online through Service Ontario.
