Orangeville Council has voted to reconsider its decision to locate the transfer point for Orangeville Transit on Broadway, in the downtown core. In a 4-3 vote, Council voted on November 23 to reconsider the motion that supported a Broadway location, and then defeated the previous motion.
On April 22nd of this year, based on a recommendation by the Orangeville Transit Task Force, Council had voted to establish the transfer point for Orangeville Transit buses on both sides of Broadway between First Street and John Street. After the BIA expressed concerns including the loss of on-street parking and safety, on October 19 Council voted to put the location of the transit transfer terminal on hold until a safety study was presented to Council.
In August of 2020, IBI Group was engaged to undertake a safety study of the proposed transfer point on Broadway. Based on field investigations, background documents review and stakeholder consultation, several issues related to road user and pedestrian safety were identified and recommendations were proposed to mitigate these issues. The study did not find that the issues would rule out the proposed location. The Business Improvement Area has continued to express strong opposition to the downtown location.
On December 14 Council will consider a motion to direct staff to revisit the Edelbrock Centre option for the transfer point which will lead to further discussions with the County of Dufferin.
The plan is to establish a new, centrally located transfer point, rather than the current location on Fourth Street, and introduce a fourth bus route.
