Dufferin County has a rich, cultural history, tracing back through early settlers and migrants who came to call the region home over the decades. Some of these powerful stories have made their way to the centre stage, featured in exhibits, books, and more.

The Orangeville Public Library is pleased to announce Wendy Vincent, Cultural Curator and PR Specialist, will be featured as the August expert speaker, with a focus on Migrant Stories. In 2024, Vincent served as Guest Curator for the City of Toronto’s Migrant Stories pop-up exhibit, where the story of a Dufferin resident, Lloyd Lindo, was featured.

“Dufferin County has a rich history which includes important settler experiences,” said Darla Fraser, Chief Executive Officer for the Orangeville Public Library. “This is an incredible opportunity to learn from a fellow community member whose story is interconnected with major historical events.”

This special event will be held on Thursday, August 8, 7 p.m. at the Mill Street Library. Registration is required to attend this event.

Supported by the International City Partnerships and the Migrant Story Telling Project, the exhibit used video to highlight the compelling journeys of migrants who travelled to Toronto, in their own world.

Lloyd Lindo, known as “Uncle Lloyd”, is a Jamaican British migrant who arrived in Toronto in the mid-20th century before moving to Amaranth. Lloyd was part of what’s known as the Windrush Generation – Caribbean migrants who left their home to help rebuild England after World War II. From there, he migrated to Toronto, then Orangeville, and eventually settling in Amaranth.

The Migrant Stories exhibit featured experiences and artifacts from Lindo’s life and story, spanning three continents and many decades.

Vincent is a Toronto based PR and Media Relations expert with a specialization in equity based strategic communications delivery.
