To witness the definition of community in action, one needs to look no further than the many active seniors in Orangeville – individuals who dedicate their time, energy, passion, and talents to helping create a thriving community for all of us.

On June 24, Wayne Townsend, a longtime resident of Orangeville who has had a tremendous impact on the community, was named the 2024 Senior of the Year. Townsend was nominated by Orangeville Council and recognized by the Province of Ontario.

"Wayne’s dedication and passion have touched countless lives in Orangeville and the surrounding Dufferin County area,” said Mayor Lisa Post. “Wayne is a dear friend of mine, and of many in this community, whose selflessness, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment to making Orangeville a better place have not gone unnoticed.”

Along with a long career at the Museum of Dufferin, where he preserved the County’s history and made it come alive, Townsend has played many additional roles in Orangeville. He owned and operated the Paradise Restaurant, a gathering place known as the heart of town, ran the art department of Orangeville’s first bilingual printing company, and was involved in the restoration of significant historical buildings like the County of Dufferin building on Zina Street and Town Hall.

Townsend has also been hailed as a beacon of hope and safety for many in the community, particularly the 2SLGBTQIA+.

Just some of the roles Townsend has had an impact through include:

  • Serving as a founding member of Celebrate Your Awesome
  • Volunteering in the early days of the GLOW group at Dufferin Child and Family Services
  • Serving as a judge at the Fall Fair
  • Volunteering at Seconds Count
  • Acting as EmCee at countless events

Townsend is also a two-time author, writing about local history and culture. His books are noted as a valuable resource for current and future generations.

“Wayne has tirelessly worked to create spaces where everyone feels welcome and valued,” added Mayor Post. “He has been a driving force behind numerous tourism, cultural, and historical projects, bringing vibrancy and recognition to Orangeville.”

The Senior of the Year Award is just one way to acknowledge the incredible commitment and work of these passionate souls. The award pays tribute each year to seniors who enrich the social, cultural, or civic life of the communities in which they reside.
