Following the January 31 grand opening, the Saputo Health and Lifestyle Centre offers a wide range of recreation programs. The 5,000-square-foot multi-purpose space, inside the Alder Recreation Centre at 275 Alder Street, offers a court for pickleball, badminton, floor hockey, and three-on-three basketball, while two smaller multi-purpose rooms can accommodate a variety of health and lifestyle program offerings and a number of fitness classes including POUND® fitness, yoga, Zumba burst and dance classes. The space is designed for participants of all ages and will allow the Town to grow programs targeting youth and active agers.

Community partnerships made the centre possible. Saputo provided $50,000 for the project under the company’s Community Legacy program. Saputo is committed to encouraging healthy lifestyle habits and building a lasting community legacy. Saputo’s local manufacturing facility is located on Richardson Road in Orangeville.

Under its long-standing lease agreement with Humber College, the Town received a capital commitment of $150,000 toward the expansion of multi-purpose space at Alder Recreation Centre which enhances Humber’s ability to expand education programs as well as deliver increased opportunities for recreation/active living programs to its students, faculty and staff.

Mayor Sandy Brown said the Town wants to encourage and strengthen participation in the community, wants to create and maintain healthy public spaces that promote social well-being and a sense of belonging, and wants to support recreation and leisure programming.

“We value partnerships and collaboration and we are here to celebrate this achievement,” Mayor Brown said. “The Town has pursued various opportunities for funding and partnerships and was successful in venturing into an agreement with both Saputo and Humber College.  Saputo, much like the Town of Orangeville, is committed to encouraging healthy lifestyle habits and building a lasting community legacy.”

Mayor Brown also praised Humber College which contributed $150,000 to provide more opportunities for Humber students as well as the community. “The Humber Orangeville Campus, housed right here at Alder Recreation Centre, is a pillar of education and community involvement. It is the Town’s goal to ensure we offer programs to suit a variety of users and to provide opportunities for drop-in and registered programs at no-cost or low-cost to users, strengthening participation for all.”

“Saputo is proud to be a partner in this great initiative,” said Saputo Plant Manager Jerrilyn Dennis, adding that it will promote a sense of community for years to come. “One of Saputo’s core values is the promotion of healthy lifestyles.”

“Well-being has a profound effect on achievement and engagement,” said Kelly Jackson, Humber’s Associate Vice President of Government Relations and Communications. The project, she said, will increase access to activities and increase Humber’s programs.

Programs are offered on a drop-in or registered basis. For drop-in programs, pay-as-you-go or passes are available for purchase. Residents can visit Alder Recreation Centre or visit www.orangeville.ca to check out program schedules or registration options.
