Due to challenges sourcing the specific stainless steel required to complete construction on the two pools located at the Alder Recreation Centre, the renovation has been delayed until Spring 2023.
“This renovation is big – it takes a lot of supplies that are not sourced locally, some brought in from other parts of the world, and specialty trades,” explained Ray Osmond, Acting CAO. “We know it’s an inconvenience to not have the Alder pool open – we’re working as quickly as possible with the level of materials and skill required. It has a lifespan longer than 50 years – all the resident's support and patience is so very much appreciated as the pool will be worth the wait.”
In 2021, the pools were closed for the replacement of the liners and an expansion of the lap pool from six to eight lanes. Since the project began, staff have worked diligently to tackle several problems that have emerged, such as the discovery of the missing rebar under the pool deck and pool basins and building structural steel issues.
While opening the pool remains a priority for the Town, ensuring all aspects of the project are completed correctly and staff understand the processes involved in running and maintaining the new pool environment is important to accomplish before re-opening.
Once completed, the Alder Pools will provide an engaging space for the Town’s residents and visitors of all ages to enjoy, whether they’re looking for aquatic programs, swimming lessons, or simply a space to enjoy the water. The new pools will be stainless steel and more accessible for the community. The leisure area will include all inclusive interactive water features such as a sensory play table, splash tower, and multi-level play-structure along with a new large slide feature.
The Town will continue to provide updates as they are available and looks forward to providing aquatic services at the Alder Community Centre again in 2023.
