Orangeville Council voted on December 2, 2019 to transition to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and disband the Orangeville Police Service (OPS). Since that date, the Town has been working with the OPP and OPS on the transition of police services and has created a transition team to oversee the work.



Currently, the tentative transition date is October 1, 2020. In an update to Orangeville Council on January 13, Orangeville CAO Ed Brennan said the Town is committed to supporting members of the OPS to enable the transition to be as seamless as possible.



As part of the process, the Town continues to work with the OPP and OPS to prepare the required documentation for the Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) Request for Disbandment this coming spring and the OCPC Brief, followed by a review and then determination as to whether an OCPC hearing is required.



Additionally, the OPP will be meeting with the OPS staff this month to outline the application and hiring process for uniform and civilian members. The OPS officers that transition to the OPP will begin a four-week training course at the OPP Headquarters in Orillia in October, during which period the OPP will police the Town of Orangeville.



As more information becomes available during the process, the Town will continue to share it with the community.
