Mayor Brown issued the following statement on last night’s decision to transition to Ontario Provincial Police:
“Council’s decision last night was decisive - based on facts as presented over many months. Town Council thanks the Orangeville Police Service for their excellent service to the community.
During this process we have determined that the OPP will also deliver an excellent level of service and allow the Town to develop long term fiscal sustainability.
Special thanks to Deputy Mayor Macintosh, who early in the process, expressed a desire to hire an independent consultant. The consultant provided council with excellent information which helped clarify the billing model for everyone. All Councillors were very engaged in this process and put in hundreds of hours attending presentations and completing their own due diligence.
Town Council also thanks CAO Ed Brennan and town staff for their assistance through this process.
Town staff and Council look forward to working with the OPS and the Police Service Board to ensure a smooth transition over the next several months. Town Council will be moving forward with the agreement with the OPP. Further details regarding the transition will be available in the coming weeks.”
