Proclamation

June 5, 2017 - World Environment Day

I, Mayor Jeremy D Williams, do hereby proclaim June 5, 2017 as “World Environment Day” in the Town of Orangeville;

Whereas, World Environment Day celebrates positive environmental action and is marked by thousands of communities worldwide; and

Whereas, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation, Canada has been selected as the host country for this year’s World Environment Day, held annually on June 5; and

Whereas, the theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Connecting people to nature”, offering an opportunity for people across Canada and around the world to discover their natural environment and to appreciate the benefits of healthy ecosystems; and

Whereas, healthy, biologically-diverse ecosystems help reduce the vulnerability of communities to the impacts of climate changes and increase the abilities of those communities to withstand those impacts; and

Whereas, the best way to help species and ecosystems that are facing multiple environmental stresses is to conserve enough habitat to sustain diverse and healthy populations; and

Whereas, through the Great Canadian Video Contest as well as sharing news about activities on social media at #World EnvironmentDay and #WithNature, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change is encouraging Canadians to get involved;

Now Therefore, I encourage all citizens to connect with nature on June 5 by learning about conservation initiatives in our community, visiting our local greenspaces or visiting one of Canada’s National Parks, National Marine Conservation Areas or National Historic Sites that have free admission in 2017 as part of the Canada 150 celebrations.

Jeremy D Williams, Mayor
